To be fair, when I was a kid, missile doors baffled me (in Metroid II)… I mean, I tried a missile on it, and it didn’t open… those things were at a premium, and all other objects in the game (i.e. bombable walls) respond after one hit from the right item…. what would prompt someone to sit there and KEEP unloading a limited resource after their last attempt had no effect?
(I’m seriously asking; how long did it take everyone to figure out missile doors their first time through a metroid game?)

(the kids struggling with the bomb blocks though, they can go to hell ;p)
Metroid can be a little tricky! I think I caught on to shooting doors kinda fast. Even just playing Metroid Prime last weekend I forgot about missiles and didn’t think I could open a door because I forgot I had missiles. It’s definitely not just a new gamer thing.
Actually I did stuff like this with all the Metroid games despite growing up with old games.
I was playing the NES Metroid a few days ago and forgot you had to get the Morph ball at the very beginning, because I went right instead of left, and wound up frustrated because I couldn’t “crawl”.
And last time I played Prime I forgot where the heck I was, who I beat or didn’t, and when thinking I had the Morph ball again, I was frustrated trying to get into a hole I couldn’t.
I think the whiniest thing I did with Metroid was, right after you get the Morph ball in the SNES game, you’re stuck in a tight area and have to use it, and I couldn’t at all figure out how to Morph. I looked it up online and cried to a friend - I read you hit down twice and it wasn’t doing it! And then suddenly out of nowhere I got it to work. I was super relieved, but kind of wish the “Hit down, wait, and then hit down again” part was more obvious.
But my biggest way I mess up in this game is just forgetting what abilities I have and don’t have, and where I left off last time I played it, since I keep played four different Metroid games on and off. X3; I love ‘em though!
